Intelligent Document Processing
OCR grew up: not just reading documents, but understanding, validating, and acting on them.
Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) is the end-to-end automation of document-driven work: ingesting files in any format, classifying what each document is, extracting the fields that matter, validating them against business rules, and delivering structured results into downstream systems. Where plain OCR stops at "here is the text," IDP answers the questions a business actually asks — which of these pages is the bank statement, what is the closing balance, does it reconcile, and who needs to see it if it doesn't.
A typical IDP pipeline chains several capabilities: image preprocessing to clean up scans, OCR or vision-language models to read the content, classification to sort document types, layout-aware extraction to pull key-value pairs and tables, validation rules to catch inconsistencies, and confidence-based routing to decide whether a document flows straight through or lands in a human review queue. The output is structured data — JSON, database rows, API calls — rather than documents, which is what makes the automation composable with the rest of an organization's systems.
IDP earns its keep in high-volume, high-stakes document flows: loan origination files, insurance claims, KYC onboarding packs, invoices and remittances. In these regulated contexts, the differentiating requirements are usually not raw accuracy but auditability and control — knowing which model version processed each document, keeping sensitive files inside the institution's own perimeter, and producing evidence a regulator can inspect. That is why modern IDP platforms attach provenance records and confidence scores to every extracted field, not just a final answer.

The document arrives, gets read, gets validated, and lands in the system of record — and no human ever touched it.
